Help with ethernet cable

I just bought a longer ethernet cable. When I plug it in the modem shows internet not working. When I use the shorter cable the Internet works. So is there something else I need to do or is the new ethernet cable just not working with the modem.thanks for any help

What is the cable plugged into? Is it a cable between the modem and a router? If so, you may need a "crossover" cable rather than the standard patch cable.

You may just have a bad cable also.
