Cd / DVD release drive won't play a DVD

My d, drive which is a Sony DVD's rw drive won't play a DVD I have refreshed the codecs installed V.l.c player and still can't kick into life.
In ( my computer ) it is shown as a cd /rw drive I think that is causing conflict.
The drive has worked in the past but I have wiped the hard drive in the past and I think I haven't installed it back again properly any ideas lads

I think I now know what's up when I last reinstalled Windows I mistakenly designated the two drives in the wrong order so e" drive is a DVD drive but is designated as a cd rom and d" drive is also a cd drive. So I am going to uninstall the drive and reinstall it . Thank for your suggestion
