Microsoft essential antivirus and spyware definitions

Hello,
i have microsoft essentials antivirus installed in my laptop. but for sometime now, the antivirus and spyware definition isn't being updated. i've tried to update it manually by installing other software also but failed. how do i update the antivirus and spyware definition? please help me.
i have windows 7 isntalled.
