Cannot Install Audio Drivers

I'm a Vista user and I've tried other "No Audio Output Device" troubleshooting topics listed here, and I've done several of the methods listed including reinstalling BIOs, installing and uninstalling the audio as listed under Device Manager (but I don't have a sound, video and game controller option), and nothing has worked. I even downloaded the drivers from my laptop's manufacturer (I have an HP Pavillion dv9700), and they won't install because my computer keeps telling me that there's no audio device installed even though my computer says that it is and everything is in working condition. I don't really know what to do at this point. Does anyone know of anything that might work? Thanks!

I tried uninstalling the device under the device manager again, and now I can't find the device at all in order to re-install it. Did I just permanently delete the device???
