The 10 Most Loyal Dog Breeds That Will Be Your Faithful Companions for Life

It would be hard to disagree that dogs are humans' best friends. They bring us comfort even on our worst days, and we can always count on them. But which dog breeds are the most loyal?

Dogs are such loyal animals that this trait has been observed throughout history. However, some breeds are seemingly more loyal than others. They vary in size, intelligence and use, but they will all protect their human(s) from danger whatever the cost and have very close bonds to them.

But what is it that makes a dog loyal? You may think that the source of this loyalty is as simple as that humans provide dogs with care and fulfilling their basic needs like food and shelter. However, the situation is much more complex than that. It is more likely due to their ancient instincts, linked to their ancestors: wolves. Wolves have strong instincts for building families and following the leader of the pack. For dogs, the de facto leader is their owner.

The domestication of dogs was a very long process, and it took time for the furballs we have today lounging in our laps or on our couches to become what they are. In the past, dogs helped people protect their property or livestock, so the most important goal was to trust the animal and for them to be loyal. The most loyal dog breeds work closely with their owners, love people, are easy to train, and are great for families with children.

Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between humans and dogs. For example, one study found that petting a dog reduces the level of the stress hormone cortisol, and the social relationship between humans and their pets increases the hormone oxytocin, also known as the love hormone. Spending a few moments with our furry friend can make the stresses and negative feelings of the day disappear. Research has found that dog owners are generally more balanced, stress less, and usually have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels than those who do not have dogs.
