The Habit You Really Need to Stop In Bed

This popular habit can significantly compromise bed hygiene. Read on to discover which germ-spreader you should banish from your bedroom.

A good night's sleep is crucial not only for a healthy body and healthy mind, but also for vital bodily processes. These include strengthening your bodies immune system, removing metabolic waste products, and producing cell renewal hormones. However, many people have a particular bedtime habit that can negatively impact cleanliness, one that experts suggest that you should absolutely avoid

According to a study by the British mattress retailer "MattressNextDay," wearing socks in bed is not only unhygienic but can also lead to health problems. As we wear socks throughout the day, indoors and outdoors, they can pick up and spread bacteria that is on the ground.

The study involved taking samples from socks worn by participants from 7 AM to 11 PM on the same day. Lab analysis revealed that half of the socks contained a bacteria called "Pseudomonas Aeruginosa." This is a type of bacteria that is typically found on the floor, on doormats, or in cockroach feces.

This bacteria can cause a number of health problems such as skin rashes, urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and even pneumonia in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Furthermore, the study compared these results with swabs from a remote control. The finding: the participants' socks were significantly dirtier than a remote control—which, according to numerous studies, usually carry more bacteria than a regular toilet. Fortunately there are a number of ways to safely wear socks in bed, because they still have a number of non-negligible benefits.

Wearing socks in bed can offer several benefits, such as reducing hot flashes and night sweats, promoting faster sleep onset, extending sleep duration, and even enhancing your love life. To safely enjoy these benefits, make sure to wear fresh socks. Socks made from natural fibers like cotton are particularly suitable as they effectively dissipate excess heat, are not insulating, and are breathable.

By following these tips, you can maintain good hygiene while enjoying the benefits of wearing socks in bed.
