The Freezer Trick for a Cool Sleep Without Air Conditioning in the Summer
Stay cool while you sleep without air conditioning by making the most of your freezer.
With high temperatures and heatwaves expected to continue throughout the summer, many have resigned themselves to keeping the air conditioner on day and night, thinking about the increased electricity bills later.
However, if you want to save a little money, or don't have an A/C unit, then this creative trick using your freezer to stay cool could save the day. It may sound odd, but the quickest way to achieve a cool sleep is to freeze your sheets and pillowcases shortly before bedtime.
Don't worry about them turning into frozen "bricks", this won't happen since dry fabrics don't contain enough moisture that could solidify below freezing.
Simply place your sheet, pillowcase, and even a pair of clean socks in the freezer one to two hours before going to bed. They will retain their cool temperature for a while, providing comfort as your body relaxes and you fall asleep.
These initial moments of coolness are crucial, as the drop in body temperature essentially induces sleep. Hopefully this will be long enough for you to get off to sleep.
Aside from the freezer trick, there are several other ways to beat the heat. Hydration is key, drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps regulate body temperature. Wearing loose, light-colored clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton can also make a big difference. Using blackout curtains to block out the sun during the hottest parts of the day can keep indoor temperatures lower.
Taking a cool shower just before bed, or using a damp cloth on your neck and wrists can provide quick relief. You could also bring the cold to you with an ice pack. If you use an ice pack, you can place it bed before going to sleep, although this method is less effective as freezing your sheets.
Additionally, there is always the good old fan. While it doesn't regulate the room's temperature, it provides a cooling sensation with its air currents, which cool you down through the evaporation of sweat. You can also place a bowl of ice in front of a fan to create a DIY air conditioner by blowing cooler air into the room.
