Dirt, Crowds, Scams: Popular Vacation Spots Few Would Return To
Some of the most popular holiday destinations have significant downsides that are rarely discussed, which could make you think twice about returning, or going in the first place.
Croatia, Turkey, Egypt: many people dream of going to these countries. However, the often overlooked downsides and inconveniences can easily spoil your holiday.
Online forums are filled with travelers eagerly planning their next vacations. One of the most popular is Onet, where users have shared their disappointing experiences at popular vacation spots.
"Crowds, dirt, vendors harassing everywhere," wrote a tourist who visited Egypt. "The water is warm, but the color... like urine," summarized another about their vacation in Bulgaria.
Recently, Croatia has lost its charm, possibly due to the introduction of the euro and higher prices. It's not just the crowded beaches but also the thousands of pedestrians in the old towns and the alleys that periodically get congested. Not to mention the long queues in front of the monuments.
The second most mentioned problem was cleanliness: several people cited Tunisia and Egyptian cities. "Especially Marsa Alam: outside the hotel, it's dirty," they added.
Safety concerns were also frequently mentioned. It's not just pickpockets causing issues, but also aggressive vendors who pressure people into overpriced purchases. "Turkey and India: aggressive scammers," shared one tourist.
Another pointed out a European example: "Paris is dangerous and overrated, my hand hurt from holding my purse tightly out of fear of being robbed," shared their unfortunate experience.
They also mentioned the famous Amalfi Coast, which was in bad shape even at the end of September. "Crowded, very poor-quality food, and high prices targeted mainly at American tourists. Rudeness everywhere and poor service. They don't care about tourists because they know there are five others who will pay anyway," they commented.
Of course, it's not all negative reviews. Some had especially good experiences in the much-talked-about Turkey, Albania, or Egypt. In the eyes of many, particularly considering the price to quality ratio, these still seem like tempting destinations. It will ultimately depend on you.
