Is It Safe to Sleep with the Air Conditioner On? The Expert Opinion
During summer heatwaves, many people rely on air conditioners for relief from the heat and often leave them on overnight for better sleep, but is it safe?
High evening temperatures in the summer can make it tough to sleep at night. Using an air conditioner can help, but there are several factors to consider before leaving your A/C on overnight, according to István Stuller, a technical expert at Gree air conditioners.
For a comfortable night's sleep, aim for a room temperature of around 22-26°C (72-79°F), although personal preferences may vary. Temperatures above 26°C (79°F) can be too warm for restful sleep. It's also crucial to avoid a significant difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures to prevent unnecessary stress on your body.
Experts recommend setting the A/C to a comfortable level, avoiding extremes. In summer, a difference of 8-10°C (14-18°F) from the outdoor temperature is usually enough. In winter, aim for 22-25°C (72-77°F) during the day, with slightly cooler settings at night for sleeping.
Proper ventilation is essential to avoid dry air from A/C use, which can irritate the respiratory system. A humidifier can help maintain optimal humidity levels. To prevent colds or muscle cramps, adjust the airflow direction so it doesn't blow directly on you and ensures even distribution of air. Additionally, make use of A/C features like timers and night modes for energy savings and increased comfort.
Regularly cleaning the A/C filters is important to prevent dust and allergens from building up, which can cause respiratory issues. Getting your A/C serviced by a professional is also recommended.
A room that's too cold can lead to health problems, including colds, sore throats, and even pneumonia. Cold air can also cause muscle stiffness and disrupt sleep cycles, affecting the deep sleep necessary for recovery. Care is needed for children and the elderly, who are more sensitive to temperature changes.
To save energy, ensure the building is well insulated. Use timers to avoid running the A/C all night and gradually cool the rooms. Choose energy-efficient units by checking the energy label for kW/h/season values. Investing time in selecting the right A/C will pay off in the long run, says Stuller.
