Flight Attendant Reveals: How to Get Better Food on a Plane
A flight attendant has shared a trick on how to get better food on a plane.
Airplane food doesn't always have the best reputation, although the food on long haul flights seems to be improving, with plenty of options to cater all dietary requirements. If you are looking to get the best possible food on your flight, a flight attended has revealed these tips.
According to the New Zealand Herald (NZH), one of the main factors that can improve your odds of getting a good meal, is seat selection.
According to flight attendant Joyce Chan, it's beneficial to sit close to the cabin. This is because the meal service on a flight will often being at the front of the plane and then work its way back. If you choose a seat that is closer to the front, you should be served sooner than other passengers, and have a better chance of getting your preferred dish.
Chan also claims that altitude affects your sense of taste when flying. According to Dr. Karan Raj, the low cabin pressure dulls sweet and salty flavors, while umami-rich foods like meat and cheese taste more intense. This also explains the popularity of tomato juice on planes.
Charles Spence, an expert from the University of Oxford, also recommends drinking a Bloody Mary while flying, as the combination of tomatoes and Worcestershire sauce enhances the umami flavor.
Nutritionist Stephanie Smith from "Agora Health" agrees, noting that tomato juice is rich in electrolytes and antioxidants. For those who are health conscious, it's better to opt for the Virgin version and order a mocktail, without alcohol, instead of the cocktail.
A flight attendant also shared tips on how to increase your chances of getting a free upgrade. Instead of directly asking for it, she suggests dressing smartly, as this can improve your chances of an upgrade, especially on overbooked flights.
Overbooked flights are common to avoid empty seats due to no shows. Therefore, it's advisable to make a reservation to ensure you get a seat. Having a high frequent flyer status can also lead to a free upgrade. However, it's important to carefully consider whether it's worth using miles for an upgrade.
