Empty Margarine or Ice Cream Containers: Here's Why You Shouldn't Reuse Them

Recycling packaging may seem like an eco friendly choice, but it's not always the best idea. Here's what to watch out for when reusing certain containers.

Once the margarine is finished or the ice cream is eaten, you're left with an empty container. It might seem convenient to repurpose these for storing or reheating leftovers. However, not all food packaging is safe to reuse, and there are potential health risks involved. Let's explain what to consider before you reuse them.

While it might be tempting to repurpose single use packaging like ice cream or margarine containers, this can pose health hazards. Dr. Birgit Brendel from the Consumer Center in Germany warns that these packages aren't designed for repeated storage, freezing, or heating.

Repurposing these containers may result in unwanted substances leaching into your food. For instance, ice cream containers are made of thermoplastic materials that deform at higher temperatures. If they are heated, these plastics can break down and transfer chemicals to the food. Therefore, containers from ice cream, margarine, pre packaged salads, cream cheese, sushi, and yogurt should not be reused for food storage or preparation.

Long Term Risks and Durability

Even if the container seems sturdy after the first use, repeated use can degrade its structure over time, increasing the chances of releasing harmful substances into your food. These containers are also not designed to be airtight or leakproof, which raises the risk of food spoilage or contamination.

Alternatives

It's better to use storage containers made from glass, stainless steel, or wood to store leftovers or other food items. Glass containers, in particular, are suitable for freezing and heating food in the microwave. Additionally, these materials ensure long-term durability and reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals.

Look for Safe Symbols

One exception is if you see the "glass & fork symbol" on the packaging, indicating that it's safe for food storage. Additionally, always check for microwave safe or dishwasher safe symbols if you plan to reuse any container, as this ensures they're suitable for reheating or cleaning safely.
