The One Leg Balance Test: 30 Seconds to Gauge Your Health

A simple balance exercise you can try at home may reveal a lot about your overall health. Take this quick test to see how you're doing!

Physical balance plays a crucial role in maintaining independence as we age. When balance begins to falter, even simple tasks like walking become difficult, increasing the risk of falls that can lead to injuries, loss of independence, and even higher mortality rates. For older adults, maintaining balance is essential for preventing injuries and aging well.

A recent study published in PLOS ONE by the Mayo Clinic in late October explored innovative ways to assess health as we age, aiming to simplify how we track the aging process. The researchers studied 40 healthy individuals over the age of 50, with half of the participants under 65.

The study included various physical tests, such as strength assessments, gait analysis, and balance exercises. One of the most revealing exercises involved standing on the non dominant leg for 30 seconds. This deceptively simple test, known as the "Flamingo Test," turned out to be surprisingly informative. It proved to be a reliable measure of physical stability and an early indicator of overall health decline.

The study revealed that while aging reduces strength in the hands and knees, balance declines even faster. The ability to stand on one leg was the clearest marker of neuromuscular aging, regardless of gender. Balancing requires stabilizing muscles and coordination from the nervous system, and difficulty can signal underlying issues like neurological or muscular problems.

This quick, equipment free test is a cost effective way to assess physical health. "Good balance improves daily activities and supports healthy aging," said Dr. Kenton Kaufman, the study's lead researcher.

Researchers established benchmarks for balance based on age:

  • Up to 69 years: 30 seconds or more.
  • Ages 70–79: Around 20 seconds.
  • 80 and older: About 10 seconds.

While not definitive, results below these benchmarks could indicate a need for medical advice. Balance testing offers a simple but powerful tool to detect potential health concerns and promote aging with confidence.
