Instagram: You're Going to Love This Long-Awaited Feature

Instagram is rolling out a new feature that's sure to be popular with users.

Soon, users will be able to reset their feed recommendations, a change that could make the platform more personalized and enjoyable. Here's what you need to know.

The new tool, set to launch "soon" worldwide, will allow users to reset what the algorithm suggests with just a few clicks. Meta, Instagram's parent company, says the update aims to create a safer, more positive experience, especially for teens. Meta explains: "We want everyone on Instagram, especially teenagers, to have safe, age-appropriate experiences that make their time on the platform worthwhile."

To reset recommendations, users can select "Reset Suggested Content" under the "Content Preferences" tab. This lets you unfollow accounts whose posts appear frequently but no longer align with your interests. However, the reset isn't permanent, the algorithm will gradually personalize suggestions again over time.

This update comes amid increasing international pressure on social media platforms to give users more control over algorithms. The EU's Digital Services Act now enforces stricter oversight of algorithmic recommendations, while new online safety legislation in the UK will soon require major platforms to provide users with greater control over what they see. Australia has taken an even tougher stance, banning social media access for children under 16 altogether, a bold move that hasn't gone unnoticed by Meta.

In response, Meta has emphasized its efforts to address concerns about teens encountering inappropriate content. The company states: "We understand parents worry about teens seeing mature or inappropriate content online. That's why we enforce stricter rules for teen accounts. Sensitive content is less likely to be recommended, and in many cases, it's hidden entirely, even if shared by someone they follow."

This long requested feature could make Instagram more user friendly and personalized. While it won't provide full control over feeds, it's a step in the right direction. Keep an eye out for the update, it might just improve your Instagram experience!
