Old Hotmail password

I used to have a hotmail acc. a long time ago, but when it chaged to Microsoft something went wrong and I could no longer access it.
Since then I'm using both gmail and icloud, but I now need to get my old one back.
I have tried to do this numerous times, with no success and since I cannot remember
my passwords or security questions, I'm going around in circles.Driving me mad....!!
Please can someone advise me how to go about it, or do I have to go to some call center in the US, only to get instru tions I don't understand. HELP!

When is the last time you successfully accessed your account?

When you created the account, did you register an alternate recovery email address or phone number to which you have access to receive a reset code?

I last used it about 3 or 4 years ago.
I have an alternative email, and I did recieve a reset code, but then it still wants the password/security question in the exact same format. I thought I remebered a couple of the old passwords but not the security question so therefore it comes back the I haven't provided enough information....yes be ause I don't know the answer!!Lol.
Do you think if I contact Microsoft support there is a way they might be able to reset it manually?

Try to send an email to your Hotmail account, wait 45 minutes and tell me if it bounces back.

Yes, have tried it twice now, comes back straight away.

You asked me to send an email to my old hotmail account, to see if it gets delivered or not
It hasn't gone through, ( at least I know now that I don't have 3 million emails which I have been unable to access.)

You were asking about phoneconfirmation, not sure how that works?

When the email comes back straight away it's because the account has been deleted from the server.
