Hi :)
To quickly sort out all your multimedia in ubuntu please follow all the steps in this guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
you might have to go with non-free to start with which should be free as long as you are not in the USA but it's worth going completely OpenSource as soon as you feel ready in case someone does try to charge you for using their codecs (if they do make sure their claim is legit)
If that hasn't fixed your problem then hopefully something early on in one of these 2 guides might help
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
If you have any future problems with Ubuntu then try this link to find help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Links?action=show&redirect=Signpost%2FQuestions#help
And if you are just trying to get to grips after years of using Windows then this might help give you something to dip into from time-to-time, it's not something to read avidly from cover to cover ;)

Also this guide might help

Good luck and regards from
