Hello,

I wish to setup a network connection between two offices which are physically away from each other in two different buildings. Lets say Building 1 & Building 2. The distance between each building is 150 mtrs max. There is a private telephone cable connecting from building 2 to the office EPABX in building 1.

Is it possible to have two dsl modem connect to each other using a pair from the private telephone cable and provide LAN networking? And how to configure and which brand of dsl modem should be bought?

Presently building-2 PC is connecting to a building-1 PC using dial-up modems. And achieving networking but this is very slow because of the limitation of speed of connectivity.

Thank you,

Thanks,

I have read about of HPNA and spoke with LINKSYS as they have a model HPRO200, but they are not confirmatory about the distance of 150 mtrs that seperate the two buildings. I wish to take this oppurtunity and wish to paste my dialogue with linksys on 22.08.09. And I could not locate any other vendor for HPNA adapters. Coming back to my question and after going through the article How Stuff Works, I wish to ask whether DSL modems work on non-PSTN routed private telephone wires?

Regards
Moksh

Hi, my name is Charlie V. (19470). How may I help you? [10:58:02 PM]
Moksh: I wish to have lan interface between two networks using HPRO200 which are in two different building and share a telephone line in between. [10:59:52 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay. [11:01:31 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Let me verify some details first.
May we know the following information?
1. Linksys device's model, version and serial #.
2. The country where you're currently based in.
3. Is this the first time you've contacted Linksys support regarding this issue? [11:01:41 PM]
Moksh: I have not bought HPRO200 yet, i googled the information and got to know about HPRO200 using HPNA technology. I am based in India. And this is my first contact with Linksys. [11:02:08 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Let me check. [11:04:31 PM]
Moksh: The products available on your website does not refer to HPRO200 in routers range. And neither the search in your website gives any response on HPRO200 [11:03:49 PM]
Moksh: Is the product discarded by Linksys? [11:04:16 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay, by the way, can you give me the projected setup you want? [11:06:53 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): I'll check and see what's the best device for you./ [11:07:04 PM]
Moksh: I am presently using dial-up modems to connect to a RAS from the PC in other building. But the connection speed is just 28.8 kbps. I intend to get connected at atleast 10 Mbps. [11:07:13 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay, let me check. [11:10:32 PM]
Moksh: The dial-up is through a private telephone line and not linked to PSTN. [11:09:19 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Alright, good. [11:11:04 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Can you give me 3-5 minutes on this? [11:11:11 PM]
Moksh: Of course, plz take your time? [11:10:01 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Thanks. [11:12:08 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Let me confirm, each building it's own network, right? [11:14:06 PM]
Moksh: Yes, each building has its own network. [11:13:16 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay, 1 sec. [11:14:55 PM]
Moksh: fine [11:14:53 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Thanks. [11:17:00 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Thanks for patiently waiting, Sir. [11:24:09 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): So, currently you're using Dial-up connections on each building, right? [11:24:40 PM]
Moksh: Yes [11:23:48 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): And you want to unify these 2 networks, correct? [11:26:26 PM]
Moksh: Yes. [11:26:56 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay. [11:29:00 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): How far are these 2 buildings from each other? [11:29:16 PM]
Moksh: http://www.homenethelp.com/web/review/images/linksys-hpro200-diag.gif [11:28:31 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Okay. [11:30:31 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): How far are these 2 buildings from each other? [11:30:57 PM]
Moksh: The buildings are 150 Mtrs apart. And wireless N series has failed to succeed due to interference & no line of sight. [11:30:36 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Oh, okay. [11:32:15 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Well, here's our suggestion. [11:32:27 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Our wired and wireless connection range are not more than 150 ft. [11:32:59 PM]
Moksh: So, a wired networking using dialup was setup. But the speed is a bottleneck. [11:31:41 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): So, in the first place 150 meters is just too far for networks to be connected. [11:33:22 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Second, I'm afraid, we can't connected the 2 routers using different ISP's connection (modems). [11:33:53 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): We can only connect to routers if they're sharing one common connection. [11:34:16 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Third, we suggest that you subscribe for a broadband connection. [11:34:33 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): We don't have any routers that supports Dial-up. [11:34:44 PM]
Moksh: Is possible to bridge two dsl modems using the telephone line? [11:34:13 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Yes, provided that they're connected to one common connection. [11:36:33 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Still there? [11:40:02 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Anything else? [11:40:08 PM]
Moksh: Thats it, thanks for your support. You are based in which country. [11:39:53 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Your session has been routed to Asia Pacific Headquarters here in Australia. [11:42:09 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): : ) [11:42:10 PM]
Charlie V. (19470): Nice Chatting with you, Sir. [11:42:18 PM]
Moksh: Thank you, [11:40:58 PM]
Moksh: once again [11:41:06 PM]
'Moksh' disconnected ('Concluded by End-user'). [11:41:09 PM]

Thanks,

I have already tried using Belkin Wireless routers, but due to no clear line of sight the signal strength has weakened at the first interference. Wired connection is the only option. And as informed by Sharpman the option of HPNA is one that I'm sourcing for. But in India there is no availability of these adapters from the first search I made. My perception is that since the HPNA technology was initially marketed during 2000-2002 the products wouldn't have been promoted in India as wireless a/b/g technology took over the market by storm.

Ok,
Don't know how you feel about international market,

but there is a company in america that sells the equipment that you may be looking for.

an email from them

Yes, we can ship to India, but would require payment in full up front and the customer is responsible for paying customs fees, taxes, etc. directly to FedEx.

If this is a commercial application, you probably want to look at our NVF-200EKIT or NV-600EKIT. Our NH-300SEKIT (HPNA based) will work, but it only provides a 1Mbps/Half Duplex link.

Thanks!

http://www.billionsa.com/product/home-networking.html

How about two broadband accounts (if available in that area), one for each building, and a VPN between the two LANs over the VPN
