For what reason are you formatting?
do you have a recovery disk that came with laptop?
do you have an operating system install disk? ie windows XP
what you need to do, if you don't have the recovery dis is go to this link,

Select your laptop model from the selector.
then download all the files that come up. These are the drivers for your motherboard, sound card, dvd etc.
you will need these if you want all your hardware to work after you install Xp (assuming XP is going to be the OS)
