HELP ''HELP!! recover my pictures

Hello,
i have a problem with retreiving my pictures from memory card, when i try to retrieve the pictures from card "it keeps telling me to format card " ??? is that cause its over the 2GB limit space??
i have a 2GB SDHC Card how can i get the pictures out of memory card, is there a program or software that i can use to retrieve my pictures or can you tell me what there is to get pictures from card
