Soundcard problem

I cannot get my pc to work with my sound card.I have an ASUS P5Q SE motherboard with a core duo processor and 2 gig of ram. The sound card I am trying to install is a Terratec 6fire 24/96.I can get my guitar to work through the card but i cannot use any music programmes. It seems the pc is just supplying power to the card. I can't play any music and there is no sound in video. I have tried disabling the onboard soundcard but that doesn't work either.
