Help with my tv

I have a Sony vaio pc VGN- NR120E laptop and it only has a VGA port, Im trying to watch a movie into my panasonic Viera 42 INCH... Model TC-P42C1... and the cable im using to connect the laptop to the tv looks like this: http://www.cpexol.com/images/psp007.jpg

I have been trying different ways on the setting of the laptop and the tv but it still looks black .... I was trying to reflect the image of the computer on the tv and even call the Panasonic Help desk but they sayd that The tv might not support the laptop image... What can I do?... Can i fix it or buy another cable?

i Notice that the TV in question has an S video input.

silly question but .........after connecting the laptop to the tv have you told the tv which source to use?
