Normally your ISP will provide a modem with a single ethernet connector(RJ45), so u cant using that...u need a hub or a switch to connect two or more computers, if your ISP has given a 2 0r 4 port lan modem no problem you can go ahead otherwise you connect one laptop to internet and make a adhoc with another laptop and u can make share your internet from your laptop
