One of the solutions is to prevent unnecessary applications to run in the background, such as Quick task.

Unless you friend has an old Commodore 64 or an old 256 clone with only one memory bar slot which looks like a chocolat bar, ram is ram either DDR, DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3 from any reputable manufacturer will do. Motherboards are usually standard to fit memory in. I suggest you look in the machine's tummy to have a look at the motherboard. That would also be a great occasion to clean the innards with compressed air.
