Steam error: could not connect to the networkClosed

Question

Hello,  

I have an XP and just intalled Steam CS however i can not play online because it does not pass the updates, Error: could not connect to steam network. 
I updated my firewall and i have internet PLEASE HELP 
Configuration: Windows XP / Safari 533.4

I am also having issues after updating my client last night, OSX also installed updates and restarted around the same time.  Regardless, client was working great before I updated.  Have checked all ports, router & modem, everything is directed correctly.  Internet is working perfectly.

Suggestions anyone?
