How to get my own server for a domain

hello sir,
i am a student and do not know particularly about servers.But i have a great knowledge of blogging. Now i am trying to host my domain with a server. Can i do it? I heard from one of my friends saying that a hard disk can be converted into a server? is it true? If not, please let me knoe the details. Please send me a mail sir. I often can not get time to browse this section. I accidentally happened to visit here. ALso please let me know how to start a website like way2sms.com where i could let my users send free sms. I can afford any amount of money for this. Please do send me a reply
