Yes, restoring it to factory settings might be the best way to clean out the junk that is slowing down your computer.
But, first make sure you know the exact procedure for your make and model and have any CD's that you need.
First you might download and run CCleaner and/or AdvancedSystem Care 4. You can Google them to find the download locations. Each of these programs has a free edition that might clean-up your computer.

2. Clean Your Desktop
3. Scan Your Windows System for Errors
4. Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Adware
5. Uninstall Unused Programs
