Problem with Computer

Had this problem for a while now and its really starting to frustrate. Whenever i try to open a file such a firefox or itunes, it always says 'choose the program you want to open this file'. In other files (such as word 2010) it says 'application not found'. I can get onto these programs but only by opening an old file and then clicking 'new'. This is really frustrating because i cannot open some files as i cannot find them (dll.exe) to help me configure the computer. If anyone has any ideas, i would be desparate to hear them. Please.
