first of all in excel DATE SHOULD BE ENTERED AS EXCEL DATE. for e.g.
1 dec 2013 should be entered either as 12/1/13 or 1/12/13 according to your regional configuration of your computer(see control panel - region and language)
in exccel 2007 there is an inbuilt function EOMONTH.
if A1 has entry 12/1/13 (1st dec 2013) then in any empty cell if you type
=EOMONTH(A1,0)
You will get 12/31/13 whllch is 31st dec 2013
