Hey I have also faced the same issue but I resolved the issue with the help of this link http://www.microsoftliveassist.com/error-80070490-windows-8/
Make sure you have the latest service pack installed first.

Hi. I followed the link and used the system file checker, it came back with "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". I then did Step 2 Run the System Update Readiness tool.
when I try and run Windows update I am receiving the message Windows Update error 80246008

Do you have multiple updates to install?
if so, what happens if you just tick one update and try?
if not then lets see if its a 3rd party software causing the issue.
follow these instructions to start your PC in clean boot then try again.

Hello.
there is only the 1 update but as it wont check for new updates, I do not know if there are more pending. I expect there will be. I have done the PC in clean boot and still receive the same error in windows update.

If you go to Windows Update and look at the history to see whats failed, what is the KB number of the update?

According to this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-faq-8a903416-6f45-0718-f5c7-375e92dddeb2#1TC=windows-7
if the System Readiness Tool doesnt work you need to perform a Windows repair using the media.

When I bought my PC it came preloaded with Vista, the disk provided was an 'IBM product recovery CD' so it doesnt have the setup.exe that is mentioned in the instructions above. I guess I will have to put up with not being able to download updates. Thanks for your time and help most appreciated :)

When you download this file and run it I receive the message "the update does not apply to your system"
What happens if you right click the update and choose hide and then check for updates again?

I receive the error message : Windows could not check for updates Error 80070490. When I click on what this error is it tells me to go to the System Update Readiness Tool. This file will too "hang' and not proceed.
