Spreaker problems

Hello,
ok...so hears the thing.... i have a HP laptop, just bought it back in october....but ive been having issues with the speaker icon in the the task bar(bottom right)...it showes that my speakers are on and the volume is up. but on my touch pad the speaker icon glows orange, meaning it's turned off.when i touch it the color stays the same,....but the icon in the screen sez its muted!!!! when i touch it again....color stays the same...icon reads unmuted.... when i play music....no sound comes out but when i plug head phones into the jack the head phones work...i tried everything...sometimes they work....other times it doesnt.....if anyone can help me that would be great!!!
