Formula to show a value in a cell if another cell has a value

Hi ............

Sheet 1 - shows a value of "Y" in A5
Sheet 1 - shows a date value in A1
Sheet 2 - A1 destination cell

"Sheet 2 A1" needs to show the date value in "Sheet 1 A1" if a "Y" is present in "Sheet 1 A5"

So basically, I need the date value in "Sheet 1 A1" to show in "sheet 2 A1" if a "Y" is present in "sheet 1 A5", and if no value in "sheet 1 A5" then cell shows "nothing"

=IF(Sheet1!A5="y",Sheet1!A1,"")

this formula is typoed in A1 sheet2.

probably date may be in number . format it as date.

whay do you mean "did not work" it worked in my co;mputere

what did yyou do stelp by step and then what did you get in A1 of sheest2

explain fullly then only newsgsroup can help
