Many Samsung Phones Suddenly Receive Mysterious 'Intermediate Update'

Today, several Samsung phones have unexpectedly received an 'intermediate update' that doesn't include a new security patch.

Devices like the Galaxy S24, S23, S23 FE, S22, Z Flip/Fold 5, and Galaxy A54 have received an update that lacks the June security patch. Meanwhile, other devices such as the Galaxy A34 and Tab S7 FE are receiving the May patch for the first time.

Intermediate Update Without New Patch

We're already halfway through June, yet the security patch for this month is nowhere to be seen. Instead, a surprising 'intermediate update' based on the May patch is rolling out. This update is now available for the following devices:

  • Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra: Firmware version S92*BXXU2AXEC
  • Galaxy S23, S23+, S23 Ultra: S91*BXXU5CXE3
  • Galaxy S23 FE: S711BXXU3CXE6
  • Galaxy S22, S22+, S22 Ultra: S90*BXXUAEXEA
  • Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra: G99*BXXUBGXE7
  • Galaxy A54: A546BXXU8CXE7
  • Galaxy Z Flip 5: F731BXXU2CXE7
  • Galaxy Z Fold 5: F946BXXU2CXE7
  • Galaxy Tab S9, Tab S9+, Tab S9 Ultra: XXU3BXE7

Interestingly, all firmware versions include the letter 'U,' indicating that these updates offer more than just security improvements. However, the exact changes are not immediately clear.

Changelog Insights

For some devices, the changelog mentions improvements in overall stability and security. For others, it simply notes general updates that are typically included in every update.

Bug Fixes

This update primarily contains fixes for issues introduced with the recent One UI 6.1 upgrade. However, the inclusion of the Galaxy S24 series in this update does not entirely fit this assumption.

May 2024 Patch for Galaxy A34 and Tab S7 FE

Additionally, some Galaxy devices are receiving updates that are not 'intermediate.' The Galaxy A34 is getting the May patch for the first time (A346BXXU7CXE1), as is the Galaxy Tab S7 FE (T73*XXS7DXE3). Both devices received One UI 6.1 in May, and this separate update now includes the May patch.

Installation and Availability

The new update is available for the unbranded variants of all the mentioned phones (and tablets). If you don't want to wait for the automatic notification, you can manually check for the update via Settings -> Software update -> Download and install.
