Google Fi: What is it and How Does it Work?
Did you know that Google offers its own mobile phone service? Here's how Google Fi Wireless works and why it stands out.
You probably know that Google offers a wide range of products, including its famous browser, office programs, laptops, and artificial intelligence, but did you know that Google also has its own mobile phone service? It's called Google Fi Wireless, a service compatible with Android phones, iPhones, and iPads. Though not widely known internationally, it has been operating in the United States since 2015.
Google Fi offers a unique advantage: it doesn't slow down your internet connection during peak times when many users are on the network. Using T-Mobile's network, it provides 4G and 5G coverage across the United States. Plus, with a Google Fi plan, you can access various networks worldwide, keeping you connected while traveling.
For Pixel users with Android 12 or higher, enabling Fi VPN allows access to the W+ network, which uses secure, high-quality Wi-Fi networks to enhance your connection. Additionally, your internet traffic remains encrypted and private. As an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), Google Fi uses other companies' infrastructure to ensure you always have the strongest available network connection.
Google Fi offers flexible connectivity options. In some areas, it can use Wi-Fi to make calls and send messages, while in others, it can switch to a 4G network. The service also supports 5G networks on compatible Android phones and iPhones, providing high-speed internet access. Currently, Google Fi covers the United States, Mexico, and Canada, and extends its international data coverage to over 200 destinations, including Spain and other European countries.
In the United States, Google Fi is available through the Simply Unlimited plan, which costs around $40. This plan includes unlimited data, text messages, and calls, as well as 5 GB of hotspot connection. However, once you exceed 35 GB of data usage, the connection speed slows down.
As Google Fi continues to expand in North America, it's likely that other mobile phone companies will consider launching similar plans to keep up with the competition.
