A long term study from the University of Hamburg in Germany, published in the European Heart Journal, reveals that daily alcohol consumption raises the risk of heart disease. Even moderate amounts, such as 1-2 drinks per day, are linked to an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Surprisingly, regular wine consumption also has a detrimental effect on the immune system, weakening it.
It has been found that wine consumption negatively affects sleep quality, as shown in a 2018 study published in JMIR Mental Health. Individuals who consume moderate amounts of alcohol recover up to 24% less physically through sleep. Over time, this can lead to problems with immune function.
There are also studies that show alcohol, including wine, can disrupt the function of white blood cells, leading to a dampening effect on the immune system. It hinders the release of natural signaling molecules, such as interferon, which activate other immune cells. This particularly affects macrophages, which play a crucial role in fighting disease, causing them to release fewer signaling molecules.
Beyond its impact on the immune system, alcohol also has negative effects on the brain. Young adults are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of alcohol consumption. Additionally, both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Stiftung Warentest warn that alcohol is classified as a carcinogenic substance.
While wine holds cultural significance, its health risks require caution. Being aware of these issues is key to making informed choices. Enjoying wine in moderation within a balanced lifestyle lets people appreciate its value without risking their health.
