Japan Develops "Human Washing Machine" with Artificial Intelligence

In Japan, a human washing machine has been developed and it is set to launch next year.

A futuristic innovation is set to make waves at the World Expo in Osaka April 2025: an upgraded version of Japan's legendary "human washing machine." First introduced at the 1970 Japan World Exposition, this cutting-edge iteration is being developed by Science Co.

The new device, named Mirai Ningen Sentakuki ("Future Human Washing Machine"), promises a quick yet deeply relaxing experience. Users enter a sleek capsule resembling an airplane cockpit with a transparent lid. Once inside, the system fills partially with warm water precisely tailored to the user's comfort.

Equipped with built in sensors and artificial intelligence, the machine monitors vital signs, such as heart rate, to maintain the ideal water temperature. To enhance relaxation, the AI projects calming visuals, including serene landscapes or meditative patterns, creating a spa like ambiance during the 15 minute session.

The concept originated with the Ultrasonic Bath, created by Panasonic in 1970. That version used ultrasonic waves and plastic beads to massage the body but failed to achieve commercial success. Inspired by the original concept, Science Co. President Yasuaki Aoyama, who first encountered the exhibit as a child, has reimagined and modernized it using advances in AI, sensors, and ergonomic design.

The new human washing machine will debut at the Osaka World Expo, where visitors can experience it firsthand. The machine will host 1,000 demonstration sessions, accommodating 7–8 users daily. Although this version is designed for the exhibition, Science Co. is already planning to adapt it for home use, potentially setting a new standard in personal wellness technology.

This next generation "washing machine" isn't just a novelty, it represents a considerable step forward in combining technology with relaxation. Besides the usual computer and content generation oriented AI that we are used to hearing about, this creation highlights the future potential of AI enhanced living, whether for therapeutic or wellness purposes.
