Can I still use "old" Gmail app?

After the new Gmail becomes mandatory, will I still be able to use my old gmail app, at least for the most basic of functions? For anything at all? It is Gmail ver. 4.4.4-278776.

Thank you for your reply. But are you sure you meant to say if I **don't** update? I'm asking if I will still be able to continue using the old original gmail Android app that came with my tablet (when I bought it in 2012). Thank you in advance for clarifying this for me.
