if all you want to do is transfer files from one computer to the next then all you need is a crossover cable.
this can pe purchased from your local pc store.
plug each end of the crossover cable into the network cards of the pcs in question.
make sure that the ip address and subnet mask are set correctly on each pc
ie. pc1 (vista) ip address 192.168.15.1
pc 2 (xp) ip address 192.168.15.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
ensure any firewalls are disabled on either pc.
you should now be able to transfer your files fronm one to the other.
alternatively
you could go here

and buy the usb transfer cable. a lot less hassle. and probable cheaper than setting up a full blown network.
