Hello,
My son has a charter supplied modem hooked direct to his computer. His sister needs to connect to the internet for school but he dosent want to go wireless. can i put another modem on the same service without effecting his setup? If so how would i go about doing this? Any assistance will be appreciated to keep peace in the family. neither one of them want to pay for a secound hook up if that is possible.

where would the modem be in relation to where your daughter will be using her computer?

if close to modem, then you could get a router. doesn't have to be wireless (son is a bit selfish, will not affect his computer if a wireless router was added)

what equipment do you have installed at the moment?
modem, Router?

here's how you'd need to setup if your son doesn't want wireless.

......................................................../ -- cable to your sons computer - auto ip adress
....................................................../
modem - -Router ----------------[
.....................................................\
.......................................................\ -- Cable to your Daughters Computer. auto ip adress

set up your router as dhcp server. set up each pc network card as Obtain an IP address Automatically.

That way they each have access to internet and don't interfere with each other.

have a look at these links for an explanation

Go to this link, it's a video presentation of what is required for a network. this will help you decide.

An indepth look at wired network. equipment required etc.

hope that's not to much information for you.
