Uninstall Vista Home Basics and reinstall the

Hello,
I want to uninstall Vista Home Basics and reinstall the XP but when i was tried i got an error msg that some hard drive is installed that having error so plz check error by CHKDSK /F,but when i tried this i did not get anything..and i m still facing problem can anyone suggest me how to install XP in my compaq laptop?

Here is the solution if you want to completely format the disk:

1. turn on the computer and go to BIOS
2. You need to set the hard disk option to IDE
3. Boot computer from windows xp install CD
4. When you get to the point where you have to choose the partition, delete partition on which vista is installed, then create new one, NTFS (quick format)
5. complete the installation
6. enjoy your xp :)

did this laptop originaly have XP on it?

No laptop originaly have Vista Home Basic and now i want to uninstall it and want to install XP in my laptop
