Stuck on blue screen when trying to bootup

Hello,
my problem is this the hard drive is bad on my gateway fx400 x series. so i bought an external drive freeagent drive usb port.
so i thought i installed windows ex pro on it?
but when i go to start up it acts like it is going to work then go's to the blue screen.
and reads

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart ;you computer.I f this screen appears again, follow
these steps:
check for viruses on your computer. remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. check your hard drive to make
sure it is properly configured and terminated.
run chkdsk /f to cher hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

the windows i installed came with a dell computer is this the problem and can i fixit!

are you saying that you have installed windows xp onto the external usb drive?

I suspect if that is the case, there may be a driver issue when windows is booting up.

your best bet is to replace the drive in your computer and install it on there.
