Currently I'm using a 30 meter cable from my router to a Ethernet Switch and then a 3 meter cable to the back of my system. The switch does not provide any signal boosting power (it's cheep and replacing my old TV with a new one in the computer room was expensive). Prior to installing the switch, I had the cable running directly into my system. It works faster then wireless. Unless your going over 100 meters, you should be fine with minimal (probably not even noticeable) signal loss.
