IDE harddrive not detected with IDE cable in

Hi their i have a problem with my IDE dvd drive

My motherboard is the P5KC so only had one IDE channel.

When i plug the power cable and IDE cable into the drive, it doesnt even power up
but
when i remove the IDE cable it powers up

I have tried changing all pins to master, slave and CS with no joy, i have only one IDE device connected to the cable and i know my power cable is perfectly fine as any other device works with it.

It really bugging me as i want to play my games but carnt.

any help will be nice
