DVD nor CD drive will read

Hello,
I have recently had to reformat my entire HD and now I can not get either the CD burner or DVD burner to read. They both worked fine before formatting. Both Icons show in the Device manager and both say they are working fine. But when I put a disk in nothing will show up as being on the disks. Nor will my burning software recognize either. I am using XP still if that helps any. Thank you for and help and advice.
