I cant connect to xbox live

Hello,
i have a laptop. its wireless. the modem is in another room. how can i connect to xbox live without connecting to the modem.
i have an ethernet cable i have it connected to the laptop and it still wont let me do anything

have you install Ethernet driver on the laptop?
