Connecting my laptop to broadband

Hello,
I am trying to connect my laptop up to my Mothers broadband connection. when I plug in the eithernet cable my computer says i'm connected but I still cant get on the internet Im sure its a simple problem but I can't figure it out

hi there,

get in command line

press start+r

tyoe cmd

then ipconfig /release

ipconfg /flushdns

and finally ipconfig /renew
