Chatting in old version of Gmail

Hello,
I have my friend in Russia and you have provided him Gmail Old version ,while I am provided New version (my country is India) and we are failed to Chat using Gmail accounts. So you are requested to give suggestion for question " how can we use Chat service provided by you ? "Please answer with appropriate details.

It's simple why don't you both use the new version, tell me are you talking about gtalk ?
