Hello Eddie,

I suggest that you try this first step. I believe it should work, however should it fail, please come back, there are other means...

1. Open my comp>goto tools>folder options
2. Select "show hidden files"
3. Uncheck "show system files"
4. Go to each drive by rightclick>explore only. DONOT double click drives.
5. Delete the file with the name "autorun.inf"
6. Restart comp or endtask and run explorer.exe through the taskmanager.

Hello Eddie,

Sorry if it did not work, but don't despair.

I now suspect a viral infection. If you agree we will attempt to identify the virus so that we can later apply the proper medication.

I am a little confused understanding your narration about the problem with IE and Firefox. Before the problem began, other than trying to download Firefox, have you made any other changes, installations, etc.?

Could you please download and install Hyjackthis. From the main menu, please request a scan and save a log. Copy the log and paste it here. The log will give me a picture of the processes and registry entries susceptible of hiding a virus.

Please download the 2.0.3 beta version.

http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

After you have pasted the log on this thread, while you are waiting for my response, try restoring your system back to a date and time where you believe it was working well.

Regards

Hi Eddie,

Now I understand much better the problem, well I mean that Pirate Bay is telling me a lot.

If you have access to the add/remove programme utility, remove Norton and Firefox.

Certainly you can open Explorer. Scroll and examine the following: "Application Data" and "Programme Files"

When ever you see Norton and/or Symantec, please delete.

If you can, remove Firefox.

Click on the Vista Start Orb (Button)
Click in the Start Search Dialog Box
Type regedit
Press enter (or double click Program: regedit)

With the registry editor, make a search for:

1. Symantec

When the search stops, it will be highlighted in blue, check to see if it say symantec and delete it. Continue the search and delete the item. Repeat until regedit tells you that the search is terminated.

2. Repeat the above for Norton

3. Repeat the above for Firefox

4. Reboot your machine

5. Report the results to me

Good luck

Hi Eddie,

Please, pretty please, when you give me feedback, I really need all the details.

1. Did you see the programmes in question in the add/remove program utility and did you succeed in removing from there?

2. Did you locate with Explorer the applications and did you delete any from there?

3. Did you find any registry entries pertaining to the same applications and deleted them?

4. Did you reboot after the clean-up?

Now for a fifth question

With Explorer, if you go to c:\ do you see any lonely files (not folders), if so, what are they?

Last question for now, can you open your task manager and msconfig?
