SD chip help with new phone

I currently have a lg scoop and soon will be getting a nokia nuron. before when i got my scoop i put my sd card in it from another phone and when i formatted it, it deleted everything!!! is there a way that i can keep my pictures on the card after i format it? or format it and get the pictures from somewhere else?
