We have several computers on a home wireless network -- all working fine. A new laptop using Windows 7 requires a Network Authorization, asking for a user name and password. The network is security enabled but users do not have user names and passwords -- everyone uses the same WEP code. What did Microsoft do on Windows 7 to require this extra step -- and how do I get this laptop hooked up to the network?

PS -- I've had friends come over and have the same issue -- there must be something new in Vista and/or Win 7. All other PCs on XP - all working great.

Did you set up Homegroup for networking in Windows 7?
Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers and will not talk to your XP computer.
If so, you will need to change the networking system to one that XP can use.

On your Windows 7 computer, click the Start button at the bottom left of the screen, then go to the Control Panel and choose Network and Sharing Center. Click the link under "view your active networks" (if you've set up a Homegroup, the link should say "home network").
In the next window choose "Work network" that will switch you from a homegroup to a workgroup so your two computers can talk to each other. Before you can network the computers, you must assign the same workgroup name to both of them and SHARE folders in Explorer.

I have found a way to disable the nagging password box in Windows 7 (probably Vista too).
1. Click Start
2. Under you user picture, right click Network
3. Choose Properties (this opens Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center)
4. Click Choose homegroup and sharing options in the lower list (this opens Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Homegroup)
5. Click Change advanced sharing settings... (this opens Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings)
6. The setting right before the last one is: Password protected sharing!
7. Choose Turn off password protected sharing and you are good to go without any restarts and stuff.

Bonus: A quicker way: Type "advanced share" and choose Manage advanced sharing settings
(this will guide you to step 5.)

Good Luck
