Vista update problems

Hello,
I tried to download windows vista updates on my laptop and not the computer won't start, it keeps says "configuring update" and then shuts down and continues with the same message. Anyone have any ideas on how to bypass the update and startup the computer? Thanks

Try rebooting in Safe Mode.
