Sims 3 base game freeze

Hello, I did an update for sims 3 using ea game updates. When I came to load the game It came up with the message 'your sims 3 base game is incompatible with the currents sims 3 expansion pack. Please update your game via game launcher'
I was left with the launcher but no pictures or information or anything. I can't click on anything, it's as if its frozen but when i do ctrl + alt + delete it says the game is still running.
Any ideas?
